Day 1

Just have a few minutes before lights out … we had a productive first day. We got to the headquarters (Rowley School) a little after lunch and immediately got into our work clothes and went out and joined a crew on a house. The house was owned by a woman named Rita who had lived there for 35 years before Katrina. She wasn’t planning on moving back in, but wanted the house gutted and everything tossed to bring closure to that part of her life. The crew we joined had started the house the day before and had gotten most of the big stuff out, including most of the personal stuff. We mainly jumped in with removal of sheetrock and a lot of stuff up in the crawlspace/attic. We saw the water line on the walls, up about 10 feet. Wow. More clean-up details later. We joined up with the rest of the RUCC’ers tonight (Sharon, Luther and Deb) and went to dinner at Mother’s Restaurant near the French Quarter. Delicious food and wonderful fellowship! This is going to be tiring, both physically and emotionally.
